Safety Tips For
FUN IN THE SUN

The Gulf Coast is an outstanding place to vacation and enjoy the great out-of-doors. There are precautions, however, which you should take in order to enhance your experience. The sun and "critters" can pose problems if not shown proper respect.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

  • Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15, 30 minutes before going out into the sun.
  •  Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors, even on cloudy days.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Stay in the shade whenever possible.
  • Avoid reflective surfaces, which can reflect up to 85 percent of the sun's damaging rays.
  • No shadow..seek the shade! If your shadow is shorter than you are, you're likely to sunburn.

Remember, the sun's rays are STRONGEST between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Relieve Sunburn Pain

  • Take Ibuprofen, Tylenol or Aspirin.:
  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible until all burns heal:
  • Elevate the affected body part, if possible.
  • Take vinegar baths to control pain (2 cups of vinegar to a tub of cool water).
  • An aloe vera lotion may also be applied.
  • Any person with an extensive sunburn should seek medical attention.

Jellyfish String

  • Wash the infected area with saltwater.
  • Vinegar or rubbing alcohol may then be poured on the sting or applied with a soaked cloth.
  • Adolph's Meat Tenderizer is another common remedy. A paste can be made by mixing the meat tenderizer with saltwater.
  • If shortness of breath, wheezing or swallowing difficulty occurs CALL 911.

Treatment Misconceptions

  • Do Not wash infected area with fresh water.
  • Putting sand on the infected area does not relieve the pain.

Man-of-War

The Man-of-War is another type of jellyfish, characterized by a blue, bubble body and long tentacles. Contact with these tentacles results in immediate, severe pain and will cause welt marks on the skin.

  • Carefully remove any remaining tentacles to avoid additional stings. DO NOT use bare hands.
  • Immediately rinse area with saltwater. Fresh water will make the situation worse.
  • Vinegar or rubbing alcohol may then be poured on the sting or applied with a soaked cloth.
  • Adolph's Meat Tenderizer is another common remedy. A paste can be made by mixing the meat tenderizer with saltwater
  • The Man-of-War sting is very painful and may require further medical treatment to control the pain. If any breathing difficulty occurs, CALL 911 immediately.

Treatment Misconceptions

  • Do Not wash infected area with fresh water.
  • Putting sand on the infected area does not relieve the pain.

Dangerous Surf Flag

Before swimming, always check for dangerous surf. Call 968-TIDE or look for flags in designated areas which indicate water conditions.

  • GREEN FLAG means "Go for it", all conditions are safe.
  • YELLOW FLAG means "Caution", due to currents and other conditions.
  • RED FLAG means "Stop", stay completely out of the water due to dangerous conditions. "Completely out" means completely. Wading children and adults can be swept into dangerous currents by sudden large waves..

If you become caught in an undertow or rip current, do not panic or fight the current. Swim with the current until it weakens, then begin swimming parallel to the shoreline. When you feel you have escaped the current, begin swimming to the shore.
